Tais is a church chanter, she sings in a choir. Also Tais is a “fancy woman”. A chanter’s salary is too small to support her living, and prostitution lets her get everything she needs, and do the thing she loves — serve God.
Tais is quite philosofical about the hell waiting for her after her death according to the orthodox canons. She says, a man lives as he wants. “If you think of yourself as a sinner, as you will burn in hell, then you will — both here, and then. And if you’re an optimist, you’ll be in paradise on the earth and after death. I don’t fear God’s punishment. I don’t think God created us to get statistics of what we’ve done, to think what we’ve eaten. It’s too small for God”.
